TEVIS

For all of you Tevis lovers-the Ride is Saturday-this is a fabulous compilation of this challenging trail! I am going to try and make it to the Forest Hill Vet check to get some pics of the riders because I think my heart is too faint to ever do this ride

Mud Dauber

I decided I had been doing too much complaining...so I took it off.

The 4 big carrots in my lunch bag were threatening to grow roots and so I finally made it out to see the horses.  Falcon first since he is about 1.5 miles south of where Nevel is.   Darn!  J had just finished riding him and he was back in his paddock.  I think his new name should be "Mud Dauber."
J had hosed him off and he had promptly rolled in the dust and was thoroughly caked with mud.
Wish I had my camera!  Anyway, he knickered softly and gladly reached wayyyy back to the left to get a carrot and then wayyyyyy back to the right for the other one.
J says he has been behaving nicely and he will be getting his hind shoes on tomorrow.   However I don't know how much trail he will get this week with the temps in the triple digits.  Also J leaves on Friday to ride the TEVIS on a clients horse.

Next on to Mr Nevel Nuts as he is now called.  He was covered with caked on dust as well and He promptly came to me looking for carrots, but I made him walk to the car with me to get them.
I spent some time fly spraying, brushing him and picking out his feet-debating on whether or not to put him in the round pen.  I did, and he started out nicely for a bit, but when I pushed him he bucked like a silly boy.  Really it is the only exercise he gets at a good pace.  It was so dusty and I was dripping sweat just standing there, so his exercise was short lived-snacks and another carrot and back to the paddock for him.

The rest of the week is threatening high 90's and maybe even some triple digits-

Guess the boys get to be Mud Daubers for the rest of the week and besides...Mud is the best fly protection around!

Rattlesnake Bar

YES there ARE rattlesnakes on the trail!  Yikes!  I was hiking though, wishing I were riding instead...well, maybe someday....Tomorrow (now that my massive case of poison oak has subsided) I hope to get a saddle back on Mr. Nevel and do some ground driving.  In the meantime a hike was on the menu for today to further explore trails that I want to ride.
AVERY's POND

Sour Berries!  : )

Yikes...REALLY?  Don't remind me!

Golden grasses
Gleaming in the light.
And then....This is why they call it RATTLESNAKE BAR!!!!!

This guy was hogging the trail
here is the NASTY star thistle that invaded the trail @ about 2.6 miles.

We hiked maybe a 2/10 ths of a mile then turned back in pain and bleeding from the darn things.  I certainly would not ride my horse through that!
My other grievence of the day were the mass of noisy boaters.  So much for trying to find some peace and quiet in the wilderness!
But the breeze and views of the lake were awesome.

Need pasture!

I don't think small paddocks are a natural or good place to keep a horse, I would love to have them on a  couple of acres so they can get up there own natural gallop now and then.

I really want to get my boys out of a boarding facility.  Does anyone have some pasture with access to water that they are willing to board my horses  close to Rocklin/Loomis area?

Since it is a blistering 100 degrees...

...not fit for man or beast, I decided to do some reminiscing and found some poor quality pics from a friend of mine in Virginia.
She had taken them on several of our "training" rides up in to the Shenandoah National Park.

Red is praying that we are NOT going to make him clamber up that water-fall!  : )

buttttttttt

Our training rides for our 30 mile LD were 20 miles on the weekends and 5-10 during the week.  Looking at the pics flushes back the memories of the beautiful weather on the days that they were taken...
You may want to note in the pic taken above that Red's feet are wrapped with DUCT tape...yep...his easy boots wouldnt stay on very well...and then there was DUCT tape....I wouldnt recommend it!  : )

Fall and short sleeves...amongst the red and orange leaves!  YEH sometimes I DO miss Virginia!
